Coordinate Geometry

Board: GSEB Class: 9

Chapter Overview

Coordinate geometry uses the Cartesian plane, defined by perpendicular x and y axes intersecting at the origin. Points are represented as ordered pairs (x, y). The x-coordinate (abscissa) is the horizontal distance from the y-axis, and the y-coordinate (ordinate) is the vertical distance from the x-axis. The four quadrants determine the signs of coordinates. Points are plotted by moving to the x-coordinate on the x-axis, then vertically to the y-coordinate.

Topics Covered

  • Cartesian Plane
  • x-axis and y-axis
  • Ordered Pairs
  • Quadrants
  • Plotting Points
  • Coordinates of Special Points

Key Formulas

Point (x, y): x is abscissa, y is ordinate
Quadrant I: (+, +)
Quadrant II: (-, +)
Quadrant III: (-, -)
Quadrant IV: (+, -)

Real-World Applications

Applications: GPS navigation, computer graphics, maps and location services, game development.

Study Tips
